The river park was conceived as part of
a major flood control program along the Rillito River in response to severe
flooding in 1983.
The first segment, completed in 1987, is 4.9 miles long and runs from Campbell
Avenue west to La Cholla Boulevard. In 2000, the Craycroft to Alvernon (2
miles) and La Cholla Boulevard to I-10 (2.5 miles) segments were also completed.
Plans connecting Campbell to Alvernon (2 miles) in 2002 are now underway.
This is part of a trail network that will ultimately connect all the major
watercourses. Raphael Payan is in charge of the Rillito River Park and Lauren
Harvey is the Department Director. Both can be reached through the department
phone number, 740-2690.
